Meet The Staff

Shane Sorenson
Director/ MA Psychology

Shane Sorenson grew-up on the ranch that is now Sorenson's Ranch School. Much of Shane's early years were spent shoeless and carefree, throwing rock at birds, riding horses bareback, swimming in the canal, and catching fish by hand. Shane began working on the ranch doing chores associated with both animals and farming. Farm chores consumed the majority of Shane's time, but still he was able to enjoy the many outdoor activities that abound. Shane had several forays into Latin America, once as a foreign exchange student, a second time as a missionary, and a third time on sabbatical traveling through most of Mexico. This experience exposed him to different cultures. Later, it inspired Shane to study at Brigham Young University. During this time he settled on psychology, while learning how little he really knew of the sciences. This piqued an interest to pursue a master's degree while earning a minor in Spanish. Shane now lives in Koosharem, Utah, with his wife, Jill, and their two younger sons. The oldest is away at college. Today, Shane is the President and Director of Sorenson's Ranch School and a farmer during the summer months.

Jody graduated from the University of Phoenix in January 2008 with a 4.0 GPA. I attended Sorenson’s for 4 months and have been home for 4 months now and I urge parent’s that are reading this to NOT send your child here. The way Sorenson’s portrays themselves online is completely wrong and not how this facility works. During my stay there I was kept from telling my family the truth of what happened to me while I’ll was there and struggle with PTSD from being there. When I tried to tell my parents what was going on, they told them that I was lying and put me on what is called PBI (positive behavior reinforcement) for days. No matter what the weather was like I was outside for days with no one to talk to. Of course I was fed but my meals had to be eaten outside and some days it was below freezing and we were still kept out there. The therapists are supposed to come down to talk to their kids who are on PBI, but really what it is is that only two therapists come down and they’re in a truck and would talk to us for less that 5 minutes and I was never told when I would get off PBI. I was finally able to tell my parents the truth when I got my first visit on Christmas and I was able to come home. I am doing well now and it’s not because of Sorenson’s. Please parents don’t let your kids suffer what I went through.

Great
We sent our son to Sorenson and will always be grateful for the work they did with him. I know that it was tough, but, not as tough as jail. This is NOT a resort. We knew that. If students don't stay for the recommended amt of time (usually one year) the school is very honest with you about the chances for success.

We were at the end of the line with our daughter. I needed to find a place for her and I was out of options. Our situation was particularly difficult because she is a type 1 diabetic and we could not find many placs that were open to that. SRS has exceeded our expectations. The greatest asset is that she is not able to wear them down. We would get tired or frustrated and give up, but they have a fresh crew that comes in every 8 hours 24x7. Once our daughter figured out she was going to have to do it their way, she got with the program. She comes home soon after 8 months and we feel like we are getting our kid back. Hard, expensive, but worth it.

Great
Of course previous students who did not work the program will find dissatisfaction. Sorensons is not a Club Med. it is a real life cause and effect classroom in every way. The staff are rough, believe in an honest days work and getting in touch with nature. Healing can take place. Former students that write negative reviews clearly whined, left early and are probably back to the same behaviors that got them there. My daughter was an avoider, runner and addict. It saved her life and finally held her accountable immediately for her choices. Growth has taken place. I am eternally thankful she had an opportunity to re-examine behaviors that would have led to little or no future. Cause and effect. Wish the facility was closer to a major airport. 3 hour drive from Salt Lake City.

My son was making poor choices and needed fewer opportunities for poor choices. Sorrenson's helped him find a better path. He says that we made the right choice sending him..... he said it after six months there and he says it four years later.

Thinking back to my experience at Sorensons now that I'm an adult, I can't believe this facility is still in operation. They speak of child care professionals and medical professionals making up their so called staff... it's merely a bunch of crude and uneducated town folk playing cowboys in the middle of a wasteland. They put on a good front to wealthy parents with troubled teens, but as my parents found out the hard way, it's just a scam.

My son entered Sorenson's Ranch School an angry, troubled teen. He left a thoughtful, responsible young man. Yes, it can be rough when the student isn't willing to try. My son was no exception. But thanks to the staff and my son's eventual willingness, things improved. They don't give up easily. My son found staff he connected with. He benefited from individual and group therapy. Once his behavior improved, he thoroughly enjoyed art class, wrestling, and guitar lessons. He also loved frequent outings such as horse campouts, skiing, and trips to Salt Lake City. He is now going to college, working part time and a pleasure to live with. An amazing transformation thanks to Sorenson's Ranch and my son's willingness.

My son has been attending Sorenson's Ranch for the past 7 months. The staff is great! As with any treatment program, progress only happens as quickly as the participant chooses too, but you can create the right environment with experienced staff to help facilitate it. Sorenson's is well staffed with caring and capable people. They have a great therapeutic model and offer constant opportunities for new insight and change in their students thought patterns and behaviors. I would definitely recommend Sorenson's to any one trying to help a teen.

I have visited the campus a few times, meeting many of the students and staff. Everyone was pleasant, The kids chatted with me nicely and none complained. I know many of the kids attending may not have come happily but as I visited each time the kids seemed happy.

This was a working horse ranch - my daughter rode horses in Western Horse Shows here at home so they assigned her a horse to care for. They would make the kids hike up a mountain once a week I think - no cigarettes allowed. She enjoyed there and loved her therapists. Facility had strict restrictions on parental visitations but we went were allowed.
