Treatment Center Philosophy

Servicing the greater Tampa area, River Oaks fully understands that each of our patients is an individual with individual needs. This is why we offer both personalized treatment programs as well as a continuum of care with several different levels of treatment, including medical detox, inpatient rehab, residential treatment and more. You can move through different levels of care as you progress in your recovery without having to leave River Oaks. We are focused entirely on offering you a customized plan of care that ensures your needs are met and that you have the best possible shot at long-term recovery. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, substance use disorders are primarily treated with counseling and behavioral therapies. We understand that therapies are extremely effective for treating addiction. We also understand that different people respond better to different types of therapies based on a number of variables, such as time spent in treatment, presence of co-occurring disorders, and the types of drugs abused. As such, we offer a full spectrum of therapies that allow our clients the privilege to receive the best care possible for their needs as well as the opportunity to refocus their lives in the way that is most effective for them. Our facility offers a number of features and amenities that range from equine-assisted psychotherapy to massage, art, and music therapy —all of which have been found to be effective for individuals recovering from addiction and trauma. In addition, we offer private and semi-private rooms, full beds with pillow-top mattresses, and other perks to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We want to give you all the necessary tools to allow you to relax and to focus first and foremost on your recovery. We know just how important it is to remain connected to support when you leave rehab. River Oaks will not leave you searching for support after your treatment is over. Our staff is dedicated to helping you build an appropriate aftercare program before you leave our facility and providing you with the support you will need during your next several months and years in recovery.Your aftercare planning begins the moment you enter treatment, and when you leave you’ll do so with a plan in hand.

This facility is overrun with repeat offenders. Most are on their 3rd-5th visit to this facility. There are groups who meet here for the summer vacations. Insurance is the means to their Florida vacation. For most in the seminars I attended, the lifestyle her is better than their lifestyle at home. There is very little accountability and it interferes terribly with those who are truly seeking treatment for their addition. I am sorely dissapointed with my care here and will not recommend this facility to anyone in need.

I am currently a patient here. I cannot get any information on my billing and my care plan. I have asked everyday for the past 5 days and have been told someone would get back with me tomorrow. I met with my therapist for 15 minutes to answer her questions and don’t have another meeting until the 16th. I am a cash paying customer so I am irrelevant. The insurance patients get all the attention. My medication has not been dispensed properly nor documented right in my charts. This is not why they promised in their ad or phone call. Find a different facility.

River Oaks changed my life, and very likely saved my life. Of course I didn’t like it at first because I was detoxing and wasn’t my true self. I didn’t like change. I had to learn to be open minded and by doing so I was able to grow so much.

My husband was targeted by a male nurse, and made his intake, and the next two following days a living Hell. This nurse, knowing my husband was going through withdrawals that are life-threatening, decided he’d use my husband as a punching bag by criticizing his addiction, and neglecting his care, which made my husband fall into a seizure, and he did nothing, but watch my husband nearly dead on the floor. There is video proof, and I am going to get it to show everyone this facility IS NOT what it says it is; professional, empathetic, honest, treat people with dignity, and respect, and most of all, sensitive to anyone’s struggles with any type of addiction. This nurse needs to be removed from his post and retrained so he can understand another person’s struggles with addiction.

I was at river oaks for 45 days and it was the most serene place. It was exactly what I needed.. the doctors were brilliant and the facilities were like a five star hotel. I was treated like a patient and a guest. The food was so healthy and the staff treated me with nothing but respect. I remember the program director helped me with some delicate family issues and I am forever grateful for him..

River Oaks is an excellent place to get help for your addiction and medical attention. I was skeptical at first but this has been one of the best decisions of my life and I look forward to living a clean and sober life with my family in the future years to come. The staff is professional and the best in there fields as far as I'm concerned. My only regret is not coming years ago-I highly recommend this facility if you are ready for a new beginning.

This was my first rehab treatment and I would recommend River Oaks to any addict struggling with addiction and/or mental disorders. The staff are very caring and compassionate. The facility is beautiful and they do a great job of making it feel like home. The greatest strength was the psycho educational class. Treated us as equals and spoke truth, hope, and life. It's not necessarily the facility, but the initial phone call to the addiction hotline gave some misleading info, and I heard that from multiple clients.

Hello I am a former client of the river oaks facility, and a recovering addict. This facility was one of my worst experiences ever. I am a very compitant person that figured out after a few days it was all about the money. I just received my bill and realized I was right. Don’t get me wrong there are some very nice people there that really care. Most of them are just staff members or bht (behavioral health technicians). Believe me they work way harder than most of the so called professional psychiatrist, doctors, and case managers. I was given Adavan the first day and felt very funny. They said it would help me relax. I don’t take those pills cause I was prescribed them before and missed a month of my life. Thanks! When I realized the place just wasn’t the type of help I was in need of. I stayed from November 8 thru November 13 saw my case manager once, saw a doctor 3 times, and never saw a psychiatrist. 3 out of the 4 times I was asked the same pile of questions and charged over $500 for the 15 min session of how are you feeling. The schedules say you have to attend the classes that are over crowded in most class rooms, and god forbid a male walk to the horse stables cause it’s where the females stay and that really sucks when your in a strange place and that’s the only thing that feels natural to an old southern boy. To get the APPROVAL to leave to go to an out patient facility I had to sit down in front of my case manager door to wait on my psychiatrist who I had never spoken to until I was about to get in the Uber to leave to say it was a bad idea. Come on dude you didn’t even know me and was doing therapy for people who arrived after me. My case manager wouldn’t do anything but walk around where I was sitting “in the floor” until I threatened to file a complaint and even then another case worker was kind enough to actually listen to what I wanted to do about my situation and helped me get things sorted so I could leave. There are a few people at the facility that care. The 5 days of nothing cost me a little over $25,000. I would only recommend this facility to people I don’t like, but feel free to make you own choice. And yes all this is true I wrote down everything in the 200 page composition book they give you on arrival. It’s the only thing that was worth keeping so I could inform people on my experience with this experience. There are far better options than the river oaks facility in Florida!

I am a middle aged, successful business person who escaped this facility this week..August 2017. I paid in cash...$26,000...if that gives a idea of my background and of expectations my family and I expected from this facility....It over sells, manipulates, and offends it's clients/patients. If you truly want guality quality health care DO NOT go there...I have never been arrested before or been to rehab before but my experience there was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life.....please read the other negative reviews for this facility...they are completely True...I am concerned for the current clients/patients there and will remain sober with a goal and highly driven purpose to shut down and bring to justice such facilities run by American Addiction Centers....Thanks,Your friend in recovery and sobriety.

As of July 27, 2017 I have had a year of sobriety which I attribute in great part to my stay at River Oaks and my local counselors. It took me 5 days at the Oaks to get my mind around my issues. The staff and classes were excellent. It is always better to learn from someone who has been there. No problem or issue you might have is something new to the staff. I enjoyed speaking with sufferers from all walks of life and circumstance. The MD who admitted me didn't sugar coat my situation and those of the clients. No funny business from anyone. The facility was nicer then I deserved or expected and I thought the food was excellent as well as the staff that served it. Make sure you go with the right frame of mind to better yourself and when you leave take it one day at a time!!!! Thank you Oaks for my second chance!!!!

Very unorganized. The first three days there I couldn\'t find out hardly any info from staff. After talking with other clients I found out this was the norm rather than the exception. The case managers seemed more worried about getting paperwork done for discharge rather than caring about what happened after discharge. The therapist were nice but didn\'t get to spend hardly any one on one time. They were dealing with mildew/mold at the time so I can\'t say many nice things about the facility other than there is an endangered hawk who may try to attack you as you walk the 12 step trail.... Overall I was very disappointed.

Therapists were caring. Most nurses were good, for the most part. The facility is too crowded for the number of staff. No outings except for one outside AA meeting a week. Recreation is much more geared to younger population. Sales people on phone totally lie. ...They need to stop lying to get people there. Positives, were nurses and therapists. Afternoon groups were garbage fill time. I would not recommend at this time. They need more staff for the 120 plus number of clients. I won\'t go back.

On my daughter arriving in Florida, I was NEVER given a call that she arrived safe. After calling over 7 times and finally reporting the unresponsiveness of the facility did they bother to call family to discuss treatment. They have NO REAL MEDICAL training to deal with REAL pain. Their method is to give Suboxin to detox...Period. Save yourself a trip, unless your looking for a warmer climate.

This place is honestly a joke, I just left there. I had a family emergency while I was there and the CEO would not let me go. It took him another week for him to even give me a 3 day pass. I went to River Oaks from January 1 to January 30th 2016 and I am very happy I did. The facility is located in Florida so it was nice to be somewhere warm in the Winter. The staff at River Oaks was very caring and compassionate. Right from the start I was made aware of the rules I was to follow and It wasn\'t an issue for me for the entirety of my stay. The beds are extremely comfortable and the food is very good. You will often be given a choice of a main dish (Chicken,Fish,Beef,Pasta) and they always offered side salads. There are several different drinks which are healthy and they also offered Coffee. If you are a smoker they often have 10 minute breaks in between groups which are allotted for that. The days consist of a Town Hall in the morning where you are able to discuss matters effecting the group as well as ask individual questions. Typically all the staff attends so any concerns can be addressed. They offer morning Yoga and Weight Lifting/Exercise. I really utilized the exercise groups and gained a lot of muscle and endurance thanks to this. There is a personal trainer and all you have to do is ask him/her what you can do to work on any particular thing and they will help you grow in that area. I noticed some clients had injuries when they went in and were able to focus on exercise for that with the trainer. Moving on. The therapy groups are very helpful to focus on the keys to overcoming your addiction. Each day your therapist works on issues out of the curriculum and this includes group activities. Things like \"overcoming anxiety\", \"relapse prevention\", \"healthy relationships\" etc are just some of the many topics you discuss. You have individual sessions with your therapist and case manager to address personal issues you have during and post treatment (family issues, a good place to live, continued care). 12 step recovery is also incorporated into the curriculum to give you that aspect as well. I had an excellent therapist and case manager. What else.... there is a huge campus where you can walk or jog around and get exercise, there is a full length basketball court, they have tennis courts, they have a 12 step trail where you can mediate. I thought it was pretty cool that the CEO went on runs and offered it to the group to go with him. The techs and nurses were all nice and encouraging. Sometimes the lines for medicine would get long, but it all it took me was a little assertiveness and politeness and i was able to get what I needed. If you do well you get priviligages such as group outings..we went to see the Manatees in the Bay. . They have huge 65 inch TV\'s in every hallway and they would often have newer movies playing or sports. You have ample time to work on your assignments and get to know the other clients. Becoming friends with the other clients was one of my favorite parts. Many of them are still sober today. The overall atmosphere was very positive all the way through. I made friends who I care about. I liked the food and the staff. I went there to get treatment and that is exactly what I got. I\'ve been to 5 other inpatient treatment centers due to my addiction. I have been sober since I left River Oaks (9 months and counting) and this is something i\'ve only ever achieved once before in my life. As with any treatment center you may find entitled clients or clients who don\'t want to be there....for me I just tried to be encouraging to them and mostly stay away from the bad apples. I went there to save my life and reestablish my recovery not complain about everything. Some people just aren\'t there and thats ok, I found a great group of guys who were dedicated to finding answers to overcome this crappy disease. It was a great decision and I would recommend it to anyone seeking treatment. They also provide you with an Alumni Contact for after treatment that continues to make sure you are doing well and its someone you can call if you are struggling. Two Thumbs up!

This was the first rehab facility I have ever been to, but would not recommend it. Definitely not enough staff, rooms were moldy(though they kept denying this-you could smell and see the mold), there never seemed to be enough nurses so many times mess were given late or we would have to be late for classes or appointments just waiting on meds. Some of the staff was very rude, however a lot of the BHTs And nurses were very helpful and kind. Very difficult to see a doctor or psychiatrist. I actually had 2 appointments where the psychiatrist didn\'t show. Case manager was not helpful and I never had much time with the therapist. Very unorganized. Most of the clients(including myself) were lied to by the representative about there being a pool and having outside trips and several other things...none of which turned out to be true. I did feel that the food was good and nutritious, however several people on the kitchen staff were rude. I would definitely recommend using the family therapist if needed-he was probably the most helpful staff there! Overall-they are just a new facility and have a lot to work on and need more staff and be much stricter on those that were breaking the rules. I would not recommend this facility at this time as well as rewarding the clients that were following the program, attending the groups, and following rules.

I was the 21st on the girls side ..it was only opened 6 weeks.. with all new facilities comes hiccups .. the BHTs needed to be trained emphasis on disease of addiction . It was a counter productive .. however in the end , if you don\'t want help than don\'t go. With anything, you get what you put into it .. life continued while I was there and it taught me to surrender to situations and people. I learned a lot about myself and others. I made lifetimes bonds like no other . Staff overall was good . therapists were good and the food was great. It\'s not a vacation it\'s a treatment center. I give it 4stars . For me it was a gift and saved my life and the tools a got from there I still have and still clean and sober ..

This place is what I imagine a juvenile hall to feel like. A prison, where you are treed like you are 12 yrs old. Run, run far away! The website is full of lies, and the people that handle your intake will tell you ANYTHING to get you there. There isnt any real therapy. They just force you to go to groups... every group is the exact same. Half the people sleep through them, the other half write letters home. The good is frozen food, that sometimes is literally inedible. Food and drinks are available for short periods 3x a day, if you miss a meal (or are thirsty!) You\'re SOL! ...I don\'t think they\'ll be open for long.

Intake person assured me this was a premier facility. My son has been there one week. He\'s been allowed or has without permission, been able to call family members and others daily, multiple times. Reports the BHT\'s, some are rude and unprofessional. He states nurses are great. He states case manager \"overwhelmed\". He says some of the groups are non productive and they\'re shown movies. I realize his opinion is hearsay, but, this was voluntary admission on his part, and his third rehabilitation admission and he notes a distinct difference and perceived lack of control by facility staff.

This facility is run in an unprofessional manner. The staff is very rude and there is a lack of communication between staff to provide proper care. Their only concern is money. I would advise everyone to find another rehab if you want to stay sober upon release

I sent my daughter to river oaks rehab, I was assured that they were dual rehab and Would handle her anxiety disorder. For the first two weeks her disorder was ignored even after I told the initial intake person and in person to the intake nurse. Many mistakes and unprofessional behavior by top staff members took place while she attended this facility. Lastly, they finally realized her disorder have weeks of misdiagnosis and her packing her bags to leave. She relapsed 3 days after she was discharged as she was unstable and ill equipped sobriety. Please do not send your loved one to this facility!!!!

Yes this facility is new. Yes they have some kinks to work out, but this is a top notch treatment center. The case managers are overloaded with clients. I know of one who works 12 to 16 hrs days 6 days a week. The nurses are awesome and work double shifts. Now that\'s dedication to the clients. This place is saving lives. If they save just one for today, they did the job they set out to do. Thank you River Oaks for letting me live another day.

This is a new facility. They have not worked out the kinks. There is not enough staff. The addicts run the facility. The case managers are awful.
