Meet The Staff

Kevin Blankenship, MD
Founder

The son of a coal miner, Kevin grew up in a small town in southern West Virginia. After graduating from high school, Kevin joined the U.S. Army to serve his country. After military service, Dr. Blankenship earned degrees in pharmacy and medicine and went on to complete his emergency medicine residency at West Virginia University. He became board certified in emergency medicine and worked in numerous medical settings throughout West Virginia. In 2014 an immediate family crisis with addiction brought Kevin face-to-face with the significant issue of this growing epidemic and the lack of recovery options throughout our country. Inspired by this experience, Dr. Blankenship has dedicated himself professionally to being part of the solution through directly serving the recovery industry and indirectly combating the stigma surrounding this issue in today's society. This dedication is what has become Jacob's Ladder.

Jacobs Ladder is mindful of its surroundings, it is almost completely self sufficient on meals. The extracurricular activities mixed with professional counseling is awesome. The weaknesses are very limited. If I had one, it is the fact that it is a new facility. Jacobs Ladder is like an old sole that fits in with todays society, community, and provides all accommodations for clients and their family members. This is a one of a kind facility and is determined to help young men in recovery.

I would like to thank one man in particular for following his vision and giving WV a ray of hope with Jacob\'s Ladder. After 2 weeks, my son has light and peace, I can hear it in his voice. He\'s learning about his addiction and being provided with skills to deal with it on another level. I\'m so grateful for this beautiful, nourishing treatment center. My son made the decision to get healthy, but Jacob\'s Ladder is giving him the building blocks to STAY healthy. Jacobs Ladder has saved his life.

Jacob's Ladder provides music and art therapy, a working farm for the residents to focus on, and challenging recreational activities for the residents. Jacob's Ladder is on the leading edge of recovery programs in the United States. There is no other program like it in the country and I would recommend this facility for any drug addicted male between the ages of 18 and 25.

The real strength of Jacob's Ladder is the focus on the programming. Rather than focusing on any one specific model, they synthesize multiple proven techniques and allow the course of treatment to emerge through individual customization. The combination of active participation in a farming lifestyle (farm work as well as residential responsibilities), mindfulness, 12 steps, yoga and meditation, group and individual sessions, music and arts programs, and wilderness programs is phenomenal. Rarely can you find such and opportunity. The setting is amazingly peaceful, setting the tone for all that is to be discovered on the 6 month journey. Jacob's Ladder is designed to foster an awakening by creating a community of unconditional positive regard for self, other and the earth. To accomplish this, the setting and living quarters are simple. While clean and comfortable, individuals looking for luxury and pampering will not find what they seek at Jacob's Ladder. Those wishing to reprogram their mind using proven techniques in an amazing setting will be more than satisfied. I've got the fortunate viewpoint of watching the guys who have come in the program progress through their discovery and awakening. It's evident that short term treatment leaves a lot to be desired, and the six month regimented program is making a difference. The accomplishments of the young men who are finding themselves at Jacob's Ladder are humbling and inspiring!

Jacob's Ladder has assembled a team of extremely talented and caring staff from around the country. The staff are in long term recovery and have worked in the treatment world for many years. The philosophy of Jacob’s Ladder is that one size doesn’t fit all, and that treatment plans need to be individualized for each resident. Jacob’s Ladder offers a hybrid treatment model that includes mindfulness based stress reduction, 12-step facilitation, music and arts therapy, farming, and adventure therapy, as well as offering clinical and psychological therapy through a partnership with WVU Medicine. The progress I have seen in the residents of Jacob’s Ladder is remarkable. Jacob's Ladder is a new facility and is establishing it's name among the treatment leaders. Although Jacob's Ladder is a new treatment center, the staff are comprised of leaders in the treatment and medical fields with decades of experience. Jacob's Ladder is located at Brookside Farm in Aurora, WV. This location is the epitome of a healing environment. This 300 acre farm is located behind a state park, has streams running through it, and is filled with wildlife of all types. This setting allows for a total immersion in recovery.

The men who run this facility have a deep desire to help the residents who live there. No weakness at this point. Residents are able to explore their own spirituality and are guided and directed in a positive light by the staff.

The staff and therapist are extremely experienced, very kind and gentle in dealings with client and families. They see the human being under the addiction and help them to address their issues. The farming and it's many responsibilities is a huge part of the program and it helps clients to feel self reliant and self sufficient and they find new skills in themselves they never knew they had. The physical lodgings and the beautiful farmland where it is situated is amazing, therapeutic and restful to clients and families when they visit. In addition to work on the farm they also have fun and take them to a wide variety of experiences...from camping, fishing, bowling, an amusement park, a day at the lake...while not meant to be a vacation the young men at this facility are having fun, working as a team and are a huge support system for one another as they all work on their own issues. The staff are excellent and adept at helping clients to address their medical/dental issues while living there. They provide constant loving support even when it might be a procedure or test the client is fearful of and this is critical to helping all the clients to be as healthy as possible. I feel extremely grateful to have our loved one there and I know it does not get better than Jacob's Ladder at Brookside Farm for helping someone with addiction issues. They have recently implemented a weekly communication via emails with photos to family which is very wonderful and reassuring. Seeing this continue makes it easier to have our loved one very far away from home. Our loved one had done an initial detox and treatment at another shorter term facility where it was determined he had serious deep rooted issues and realized he needed a long term program afterward. The therapist there and the therapist at Jacob's Ladder communicated very effectively so that our son had a seamless transition where he is continuing to work on his issues...and time was not lost as he moved into this longer term program. Jacob's Ladder staff very quickly understood what our son needed to work on and we are grateful to have him in their program.

Warm, caring staff in a rural setting allows for residents to concentrate on healing. I had the opportunity to see real change in a young man who stayed at Jacob's Ladder. He had the chance to experience several types of therapy options including mediation, mindfulness, yoga, exercise, AA/NA, motivational interviewing, counseling, art, and music therapy in order to find what spoke to him. He has been clean five months and is physically and spiritually a different person. Having the experience of caring for the farm and its animals has helped him invest in life again.
