Treatment Center Philosophy

Asana Recovery is a family owned alcohol and drug recovery program located in Costa Mesa, California just a couple miles from the Orange County coastline. The program is state licensed and nationally accredited for medical detoxification, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Utilizing evidence based practices and harm reduction techniques, our management and clinical staff include some of the most experienced and accomplished addiction treatment professionals in the industry. Providing empathetic support for clients entering treatment whether it is their first or umpteenth episode is our specialty. The “Asana Way” focuses on providing personalized and comprehensive treatment plans for both men and women in recovery. It embodies our forward-thinking approach to the treatment of addiction, pairing traditional and alternative methods, and serving all clients with compassion, while providing appropriate structure and practicing essential values in work and in play. Treatment planning begins immediately upon admission and during detoxification with involvement in individual and group therapy sessions and case management. Medication assisted detoxification, or detox, from opiates, alcohol and/or other drugs is managed closely by the onsite medical team to ensure client safety and comfort. Non-traditional detox protocols are often implemented to better match each client’s uniqueness. Daily treatment programming is specifically geared towards addressing underlying issues driving the addiction while also developing recovery tools. Group therapy is interwoven between individual and family sessions. Therapy modalities can include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Traditional 12-Step and Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) groups are attended on a nightly basis. Mindfulness, physical exercise and healthy eating are incorporated into daily treatment programming. Most meals are prepared by an on-site chef with a focus on replenishing basic vitamins and minerals. The nutritionist provides dietary analysis, consulting and meal preparation training. Daily physical activity can range from beach walks to cross fit training to one-on-one boxing with our personal trainers.

  • This is the first review I have written, but I felt it was important to make this one for anyone out there that might be struggling to sort through the hundreds of treatment options available as I did. Honestly, I decided on Asana because they were great about working with my insurance, had excellent accreditations, and well… the weather in Southern California is amazing. But, once I got here, I realized what a truly remarkable decision I had made. Asana feels like home. The staff not only takes care of our needs, but really listens to what will help each one of us in our individual recovery and then goes above and beyond to make those things happen. The therapists take the time with each of their patients to really get to the root of what is going on and then provide practical steps and solutions to help get to the cause. The process groups don’t just seek to repeat the same black and white techniques I have been exhausted by in the past, but take your individual needs into consideration and structure the discussions accordingly. There is freedom to choose not only your own recovery path, but also basic freedoms that I was denied in other facilities I have attended before. Just as one simple example (I won’t get into the specifics of my therapy here or I would provide many more), nature is an extremely important part of my own personal recovery, and they actually put together outdoor trips… such as one to beautiful Crystal Cove nearby. I not only feel like a person again, but I am finally finding my life… a life force I always knew was in there but have failed to uncover time and time again. My Asana tribe has helped make that possible. If you are still reading this, I wish you the best for you or your loved one in recovery. I hope you find the best next step... all the love!
  • I work here &i absolutely love it. The whole staffing crew I work with is amazing; I’ve worked at multiple places & once I started working here &got to know my coworkers, I knew this is where I wanted to build my future at. I have never worked at a place that is 100% dedicated to their clients. Chris is awesome! He taught me all the ins & outs &has everyone’s interest in mind at all times. Morgan LVN, is another staff member that is whole heartedly invested in all the clients care. I love it here.
  • Asana has helped me thru the worst times of my life. Monica and Logan saved me more than once. I definitely wouldn't be here without them. With the help of groups and therapy sessions im on the road to recovery. To become a better me. And continue this healing process. Asana is a smaller rehab with a big heart. I so recommend asana!
  • This has been one of the best experiences in my life period. The staff are REAL as they come, they helped in making my recovery so unique just as unique as myself. I had lots of laughs as well not to mention morning meditation at the beach to reflect was such a pure experience. I thank all the staff at Asana Recovery. Thank you for guiding me to gain my power back, and guiding me to find myself again.

Meet The Staff

Chris Small

Doctor Chris Small has been the Medical Director at Asana Recovery since our founding. He is responsible for the administration of medical services and clinical care here, which includes the management and oversight of individual treatment through the duration of each client's stay. Dr. Small is certified by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Family Medicine, making him one of a handful of doctors in the U.S. who have completed additional training necessary to treat the full-spectrum of medical and psychiatric illness. At Asana Recovery, we recognize the importance of a detox program that is administered by the right professionals who have the proper training and experience to manage the symptoms and administer the appropriate care to ensure a safe, successful and complete detoxification as a critical first step in recovery. With his unique qualifications to treat both medical and complex mental conditions, Dr. Small brings that expertise to Asana. In keeping with his dual board certifications, Dr. Small's approach to treating addiction is based on the concept of a strong mind-body connection—that true healing must take into account both the physical and emotional/psychological needs of clients. Families and clients who turn to Asana for their recovery needs can find comfort in knowing that every treatment plan is designed for each client’s particular medical and psychiatric needs. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, Dr. Small completed his dual residency training at the University of California, San Diego, where he is currently an assistant clinical professor of the Department of Health Sciences.
