Treatment Center Philosophy

A Better Today Recovery Services (ABT) provides evidence-based treatment for those who are struggling with substance addiction and co-occurring disorders. The methods we utilize are the latest and most advanced approaches that have been proven most effective in the medical and psychological fields. Our Masters level therapists conduct individual assessments in order to develop the treatment plan that is specific and tailored to each individual’s needs. Each treatment plan incorporates evidence-based treatment strategies that will balance your program and focus you on a path of recovery and sobriety. A Better Today recognizes the necessity of behavioral and emotional shifts that were the causes of addiction and treats clients accordingly. We understand that very often, drugs and alcohol are not the problem, rather they were used as a solution to underlying conflicts. We help clients develop healthy alternatives to drugs and alcohol as means of coping by conquering harmful emotions and thoughts. Services like cognitive behavioral therapy, music and art therapy, nutrition and fitness, group and individual counseling, and life skill coaching are just some of the treatment strategies we incorporate to help develop coping skill and life tools. A Better Today genuinely cares about your journey through recovery and will focus the end of your treatment on relapse prevention, developing a strong support system with family and friends and finding a sober living community in your area to help introduce or reintroduce you to a lifestyle that is drug free.

Testimonials

  • "I have struggled with addiction for a long time, I have been through multiple treatment facilities and never was able to find success in sobriety, that was until I went through A Better Today. There is no treatment facility that can cure you from the disease of addiction, there is no cure, but ABT gave me a fighting chance. ABT gave me the tools I needed to utilize in order to recover from active addiction. They also introduced me to anonymous programs which is the greatest gift I've ever been given. The staff is very knowledgeable, very caring, and very sincere. When I was there, I had a therapist and a life coach, I met with each on an individual basis for one hour a week, and they helped me immensely. ABT saved my life and saved the life of many others like myself. I would recommend ABT to anyone I know that is struggling with addiction."
  • "It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to reflect on my time spent and experiences gained while at A Better Today Recovery Services. The following may not represent how I felt or perceived my journey upon discharge but is truly a reflection of my 514 day journey thus far. Today I am very grateful for being willing to make a change in my life. The journey commenced with the initial contact with the intake staff, Rob and Cory. The willingness to fulfill my needs that these two men demonstrated was unparalleled. Matched with their ability to instill a sense hope in me, I was able to become more comfortable with the thought that there is a better way to live."
  • "Amazing facility with amazing staff. I went through 3 other rehabs and none treated me with the love and compassion as ABT has. They treat me like family and got me to open up and address the core issues. I finally have hope!"
  • "I went through A Better Today's residential treatment program and would highly recommend this program to anyone with an addiction and a will to change. The incredibly warm and caring staff made my experience at their facility amazing. They gave me the tools and knowledge that I needed to stay clean and sober long after I left their program allowing me to build a full life that I never thought was possible. My parents got their son back, my sister got her brother back, and my friends got their friends back and most of all I got myself back. They truly care about each and every client and they changed my life in a major way. I highly recommend A Better Today if you or a loved one are looking for help."

As a primary care doctor I never saw people actively change, those who have diabetes continue to have diabetes as they never change their diet. For heart disease, very rarely did my patients change their lifestyle to better their lives. You do not see people really changing. In addiction medicine, the client’s actively change their lives and practice the skills learned in treatment to maintain sobriety. People really do change their lives to get better, and I love seeing that. “ - Michael Carlton, M.D.

A Better Today changed my life. in 108 days, ABT taught me the skills to love myself, move forward with my future, live in the moment, lessen my anxiety through prayer, cope with my addiction, cope with my addicted mother and her hurtful ways, realize my self worth, that my life is worth living, I am loved by others, I am beautiful, It's okay to be me, and most of all... that God loves me, no matter what my past looks like. There are many other appreciations I could list, but I would be here all day. :) I made many friends during my rehabilitation, many I still keep in touch with via Facebook.. I think about ABT staff on a weekly basis, wondering how and what they are doing for work today. I would be more than happy to come back for the free 30 day refresher.

I arrived at A Better Today Recovery Services roughly two years ago. During my stay there I received top of the line quality treatment and was always treated with compassion and love. The living situation is very rare compared to other in patient rehabs. Clients live in their own apartment style setting which really helped me feel comfortable. Im blessed to be sober today and all my thanks goes to this program.

The people here truly care about the impact they are making. It is good to know that during such a trying time in our country where we are experiencing the opioid epidemic, there are people who truly want to help. The RC staff make a big difference as many of them have walked in the shoes of the clients. It’s a beautiful thing.

So lots of people say ABT saved my life which in itself is a pretty dramatic statement...but ABT did that for me and a whole lot more. ABT taught me how to forgive myself for a lifetime of guilt and shame, they taught me how to make better choices and to take responsibility for my actions. ABT showed me how to live and love without giving away my dignity. ABT did this because they believe every life is worth saving, and they do it with an amazing staff and a bevy of resources and connections throughout the Phoenix area. When I finally graduated from ABT I had a place to live, a job and transportation lined up. I had a sponsor, a home group and Evening Outpatient Therapy. I continue to live an active life in recovery and I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to all that have helped me so graciously. Thank you ABT...for saving my life and then showing me how to live a life worth living.

I have been having great luck with the program at this place. The staff do not coddle you but direct and guide you. You are shown how to handle problems that come up and how to take ownership of your life for a better future. most of the staff were excellent but like everything in life there are a few bumps. Might just be you can not connect to everyone. I can not say there are any weaknesses. I think it is the mindset of the users of the service. I felt they offered the info but can not make you learn or use it.

This day 5 years ago I landed in Las Vegas. To start my treatment at ABTRS. Full of hate and discontent. I learned, listened, and applied, the things that have changed my life. So today I celebrate 5 years clean. I took the suggestions home and put them into action, what a life I live today. So thank you ABTRS

I underwent treatment at this center. I do not think everyone will be happy with it but I am very much so. I had been drinking 1 3/4 to 2 gallons of hard booze a week and could not go a day without it. It caused me a divorce and problems with my family, I had very few friends and things were getting bad at work. This program requires you to put effort in it as it does no good them giving you the tools and skills without you using them. I thought the ones that seemed to get the least were the ones that thought it should be handed to them. It has made my life easier to manage once i accepted the facts that it was me and could blame it on no one or nothing else. This is the only program I have been through and feels like the only one I will need. Being the age I am I believe it is the only chance I will get and I am thankful this is the one. The staff were helpful and friendly in most cases and we all know we will not get along with everyone. In my opinion they offered what was needed and it was up to me to accept and use it. I can only say how great full I am to have been able to go through this program.

Problems with ABT... short story: dishonest staff and clients, staff willing to drop off patient at airport without further transportation arranged. Total disregard of common decency. Here's the run-down of my wife's experience. She was admitted at the beginning of April for a 90 day program. We were charged $2,400, in cash, up front for their services. Yes, we do have health insurance helping. At approximately 40 days into the program, they failed to refill my wife's prescriptions. It took them more than 10 days to finally refill those prescriptions and allow my wife to resume her psychiatric meds. Due to the lapse in medications, as expected, my wife started to have symptoms appear. Instead of allowing sufficient time for her meds to stabilize and correct any effects of being unmedicated, ABT said they could no longer treat my wife. So, at approximately day 60, ABT wiped their hands clean of my wife. They told her she could either check into a mental hospital 3000 miles from her home and family, or leave. Two options, none of which are ABT. Not wanting to be institutionalized for an indefinite time that far from home, she chose to leave. Knowing that she did not have a plane ticket, and knowing that a plane ticket is not something that she was going to be able to purchase on the spot (not enough money), ABT dropped my wife and her belongings off at Skyharbor airport. So, ABT negligently handled my wife's meds and then ditched her at the airport instead of allowing her time to regain mental stability. My wife was doing great at ABT up until they failed to properly medicate her. She really thought she was going to make it this time. I cried for joy over this. We still do not have an answer as to why ABT failed to refill prescriptions and why it took so long to get a refill. We are not talking about exotic meds here. Quick note: It was also apparent that the different departments at ABT don't communicate well with each other. If you like being told multiple stories about your medications, treatment, and belongings, then you'll love ABT. After realizing that it might not be a good idea to kick someone out of treatment under these circumstances, ABT seemed to have a change of heart. They picked up my wife at the airport under the guise of spending a few days at one of their residential facilities until she decides to either stay in treatment or is able to obtain a flight home. Then, she found out the next morning that all they were doing was having her restart treatment. She was not told that what they were doing was having her restart treatment; they lied to her. At this point, she has a flight. The flight leaves on Tuesday. This being Saturday, she only has to live at the airport for three days and three nights. That's right, ABT willingly dropped her and her belongings at the airport three days prior to her flight. During her stay, my wife experienced a few good people. Not everything was bad. There were a small handful of helpful clients and staff members. Unfortunately, she also had issues with here lunches and personal property beingtakenff. In fact, on the day that she was taken to the airport, her baggage became two cartons of cigarettes lighter. You know, my wife probably could have handled being told that she needed a higher level of care. However, when it comes under that circumstances of all that happened before it and what has happened since, it seems rather disgraceful. Especially more so that we paid up front for a 90 day program ABT walked away from just before day 60. Keep in mind that ABT walked away from my wife after refusing to take responsibility over their own medical negligence. You would think that some token of apology would be in order. Perhaps just a flight home or a refund of the unused portion of my wife's up front expense would prevent us from having to seriously consider obtaining a an attorney. I cry tears of pain for my wife knowing that this experience is going to drive her to use once again and most likely never want to return to treatment. So, it's Saturday. My wife is homeless at Skyharbor airport until Tuesday morning. Let's all think good thoughts for her. I can't recommend A Better Today Recovery Services.

All about the money, very sad because some very ill individuals seek their care and are in their care every day. Very kind individuals in their central call center. I spoke to a woman a few times that seemed to genuinely want to help. It was because of her that I decided to give ABT a try. She left me off the phone saying she would see me soon. Upon arrival at the address given to me, it turns out that the staff were not expecting me and it was then that I found out that the person I had been speaking with was based out of a call center somewhere. After waiting for about 15 mins, the one gentleman at their central office put together some paperwork. Traditional paperwork along with a promissory note that gave the details of the payment plan their call center accountant had drafted up. After signing, I was then presented with a daily price for treatments form which listed some pricing for certain evaluations. I should have asked for copies, but after having already entered into withdrawls, I was not thinking to ask for them. It turns out that they charge $1200.00 for a Urinalysis (standard drug screen urine test), yet just less than $900 for individual therapy sessions. Some of the staff genuinely want to help, but most are loud, yell at clients using profanity, and unprofessional. It became apparent that there was a staffing shortage or issue that was very publicly made aware to clients as one of the nurses had begun working a second 12 hour shift with no break and was frustrated. It took several days to receive my medications for my pre-existing condition as the doctor only visits 2 times a week to fill prescriptions. I complained to him when I saw him next and his statement back to me was that if I wasn't taking the medication prior to seeking treatment at ABT, why must it be an emergency for him then? I had been out of state for my grandmother's funeral and due to pick up the prescriptions upon my return, but advised by the nice woman from their call center not to worry as I would be assessed and treated upon my arrival. I was not. I could go on and on about how unprofessional, sadly insensitive, and unaccomodating this institution is. I want to give a bit more advice though. Although their detox houses are kepts rather kept and cleanly, it is the clients who clean the facilities weekly prior to the company administrator's arrival on Sundays. Deep cleaning is conducted every Saturday and is termed "Double Scrub." The main office is a joke. That is where group sessions are held for 6 hours a day. The carpets are ripped and worn, very dirty restrooms that you must access with a key outside, no designated lunch space though you must bring your own lunch. I tried eating my lunch on the lawn which was very near a single picnic table over run with smokers when the sprinklers went off. It was then that I knew that this was not the place for me. If there were people that were getting high prior to coming to give me advice on the rest of the program I was about to experience, I was out. I did not go to their sober living program as I was so terrified by what I had already experienced. I signed some letters saying that I would not hold the company liable for anything and that they were not going to facilitate any part of my leaving "Against Medical Advice." After receiving my personal property, I was shown the door. No help scheduling follow up appointments, my phone was dead, my car at my house, just me and my bags. So, I started walking. My brother was notified that I had been discharged as a requirement of him being my emergency contact, but was unaware that I had began walking to try to find a way to contact him. 1000% agreed that they are all about the money.

Very unprofessional. Clients are given classes for proper communication; yet I was hollered at twice by staff. Clients used prejudicial remarks and staff said nothing to them. Clients were disrespectful of the Lords prayer and staff let that go without saying anything. Small rules were strictly enforced and it made me say "what is important here". Had to cook own meals; even in detox. One TV in community room. People with special needs were in IOP quarters without medical staff. Apartments not cleaned well in between clients and carpets were nasty. I left after 47 days and because it was before they wanted me to leave accommodations to the airport were not provided. I walked in the dark to the gas station at the corner with my suitcases because they would not give me address for the cab I paid for to pick me up at the living quarters.

The first two weeks of my recovery from heroin was absolute hell, I was going to leave this place a one star because screw them and their steps, right!? But I was wrong, when I went into A Better Today, btw I have been to 3 other rehabs over the last 20 years of my life. Heroin is one hell of a drug! Once I got over myself, I started to see my life with purpose; something I didn’t do before. Do they have things to work on at this treatment facility? Yes but I have never seen a staff try so hard to keep people in recovery when some of us really just want to leave. They show they care, not many places do. There was one other place that had bunkbeds with bed bugs and I was like ”I am out”! A Better Today has clean bedding with no bunkbeds and I was so grateful! But now I am just ranting cuz I have been 6 month sober and this has been the longest I have been sober, so grateful. Thanks to staff for all your help!

A Better Today is more concerned with revenue than their patients. My son was told to leave immediately because the insurance did not authorize additional days. Just hours before making him leave they said that he was authorized for 10 more days. Don\'t send anyone here from out of state because they may be on the streets waiting to be picked up. Disgusting.

The facility itself was very nice. "Front office" - intake staff professional and seemed to be caring. Power struggle between staff and clients; clients responsible for own meals including shopping; grouping clients in same groups and same housing created friction and impeded healing. Staff was reactive. Seemed to forget that people with addiction should not be backed into corners or forced to respond when not ready.Client labelled "noncompliant" when not ready to conform to staff demands or when certain issues were pressed during group, individual counseling. Very disappointing.

Beautiful and clean housing, individualized treatment, caring staff I never wanted to leave! I had the best experience at A Better Today Recovery Services. My intake was a breeze thanks to one lovely staff member. She made me feel like she really knew what she was talking about and genuinely cared about the situations that I was in. The treatment is very individualized and made me feel that I was not excluded or an alien because I am a drug addict. They gave me my life back and I could not be more grateful than that! Today I get to be a part of my family’s lives, I get to be the one people depend on and that is all thanks to the incredible team at ABTRS. Without you guys I would not know where I would be!

Strengths included Aftercare, Caring staff, spacious housing, provide treatment that makes sense I did not see any weaknesses! My 90 day stay with A Better Today Recovery Services was one of the best things that could have happened to my life. Before I was shooting up dope in the alley way behind the grocery stores to now having a set of tools that they gave me to get through life without having to pick up a drink or a drug. The best part was the aftercare, one staff member, who is the best outreach person; helped me to stay connected to the place that helped me restore my life. The houses were very spacious and made me feel that I was at home. They provided nutrition specialists, yoga, and helped me by going to the gym to make sure I was healing the mind and body. The therapists due do their jobs very well and know what they are talking about. They made me feel like I was not alone in this battle of addiction and that I was a real person that was just struggling with a hard time in my life. Thanks to the program at A Better Today Recovery Services I am now celebrating 2 years of continuous sobriety.

They care about each individual and their road to recovery. The homes are comfortable and bring all the amenities you would expect from home and some even offer pools, which is nice in the Arizona summer. The alumni program is close knit and they try to incorporate people from the outside to come and see what living life clean and sober looks like. I would say we have one of the better treatment programs Arizona offers. We want to help as many people as possible so our therapists are often stretched thin, especially since there is a shortage of psychiatrists nationwide. Some patients who come in at a later date have to wait a bit longer to receive individual counseling, however, group counseling is offered as soon as they are admitted. When there is company wide picnics, the CEO is one of the first to show up, greet each person and I can personally attest to this, runs a mean inflatable obstacle course. This person has made the company open to alumni from our facility and tries to offer the safest work environment for their recovery. I have seen people flourish after leaving A Better Today facility. I have seen lives change. A Better Today has its problems but what they don't lack is compassion and dedication to this line of work.

Treatment Plans: My treatment was personalized based on length of drug abuse, substances being abused, and co-occurring disorders. Responsiveness of Staff: My detox was difficult for me, but the nurses and physicians who tended to me kept my hopes high and helped me through the aches and pains. I would have been happier with a personal massage now and again, but for the price I was willing to pay for treatment personal massages was not in my budget. When my family came to me about my addiction I did not realize how badly I hurt them and the damage I caused to my marriage. Thinking I would have to go through a whole nother set of therapy when I graduated from ABTRS was stressful. Toward the end of my treatment family therapy sessions were introduced to my treatment plan and I was able to rekindle my relationship with both my children and my wife upon graduating. They helped my family understand my need for therapy and educated them about my addiction. They helped me set boundaries, detailed relapse prevention strategies, and helped focus my mind of the positive aspects of life. What sparked me to do this review was really the follow up from ABTRS. I received a call from their Alumni Coordinator asking me about my journey through recovery, whether I still attend meetings, and asked if I wanted to get involved in the alumni program. I am so shocked at this even now when I am writing this review. I just attended an alumni picnic where there was a meeting and I got to bring my family. I met the CEO and he seemed inherently concerned about my experience with ABTRS and wanted to know how my relationship with my family and friends was going now that I am sober. Sometimes it is hard to remain sober because my friends all drink and go out, finding a community that doesn't need to get wasted to have a good time is refreshing. Really, ABTRS is big enough as a company for doing things the right way, but small enough to care deeply for their clients long after graduation. I am 3 years and 4 months sober and proud of it!

I appreciate being there and all they have done for me. They didnt have a jacuzzi where I stayed. Reach out if you need help do not waste any more time. This is a really good place and they really care. I have recommended to a few other people and they are doing well. Changed my life.

ABT saved my life, the place was unbelievable, I had been to other places in the past but the way the staff actually cared was the most helpful of all. I wouldn\'t be where im at today if it wasn\'t for this place. I miss everyone there alot especially the staff! And I would definitely recommend them this place, its definitely a life changer!

I am an alumni of A Better Today and their program was absolutely wonderful. Out of the 5 rehabs that I have been too, I never encountered such a caring and compassionate staff. The therapists were amazing. They helped me work through many underlying issue that led me to using drugs. The programming set me up for success, I have been clean since May 28, 2014 and it is a direct result of the treatment I received while I was at ABT. The amenities were top of the line, the meals are home made, and their approach to addiction is spot on. I would highly recommend anyone who is suffering from addiction to seek help at A Better Today.

A Better Today saved my life. As a long time addict who bounced from one program to another and struggled to maintain anything close to long term recovery; ABT gave me the opportunity to discover the inner demons that plagued my life and the tools i need to keep them at bay.

My daughter admitted herself to ABTR. She was placed in detox although that was not the issue and was discussed thoroughly in our conference with ABT personnel. She received NO services, yet we were charged $6000. She left after 2 1/2 days to go to another facility that she believed would actually be of some help. Within hours she had a counselor, group meetings, therapy. Unlike ABT which provided NOTHING! When we disputed the charges on the grounds that ABT did not do anything, they refused to credit our $6000 payment saying that the 2 1/2 days my daughter was there were valued at $2400 per day. Do not even consider it!

I'm glad I went. However, previous comments about some of the staff, particularly ones who did not have an addiction problem, are right on point about them being condescending and treating residents like children. I went to ABT with a heroin habit. Chose it because the facilities nearby me are a useless, revolving door. Some of the staff are stellar, however, I was not assigned any of them. You are required to go to 2 AA meetings a day, morning and night, which is something they make no note of on their website, sometimes being shuttled 45 minutes there and back, so don't go if you're not into the 12-step brainwash of having to attend meetings and identify as an addict for the rest of your life, don't go. This is old-school treatment approach and not helpful if you want to leave your past behind. If you're between the ages of 18 and 25, this could be a program you can live with, but as an over-60 adult who knows the difference between thoughts and feelings, it can be like kindergarten. The facilities are actually very nice, the house managers vary from extremely compassionate and helpful to drill sergeant. One of the house managers, who was very helpful, was 19 years old and had been 'clean' for 2 years, probably longer than she had been using. The good news is, I made use of my nearly one month there and have been clean since I left. Do your homework. When I got there, there were multiple beds available and with 5 women to a room and a half, we shared one bathroom. Getting shower time was a huge frustration in the 116-degree heat. Honestly, I really liked some of the young women who were residents, and some of them seemed to be doing very well, so this is just my experience.

Horrible experience. I hardly know where to begin. Of the myriad of complaints, one of the biggest was the lack of time that clients get with their therapist. Clients get only 50 minutes once per week with their therapist, and oftentimes, it takes them a week or two to even assign a client to a therapist. I knew one guy that was on his 3rd week there, and he still had no therapist! I\'ve worked in healthcare for 17 years, and I could not believe the paucity of quality therapeutic services provided. Approximately half the time an intern oversees group sessions, and oftentimes, clients are picked to lead the group, with the counselor saying very little. Sometimes we would spend an entire hour just analyzing a paragraph or short story. It was painful. There is also no psychiatrist on staff, and a family doctor is contracted to come in and see clients 3 days a week, and he manages medications.....I was detoxing that first week and spent the first three days lying on a cot in a supply room, which they absurdly called the \"serenity room.\" It was horrible...The clinical staff rarely returns phone calls to family members. My spouse said that at the family mtgs, other people were complaining about this as well. My family would try to get information, and when they did get any, it took multiple phone calls, and much time to get a response. I\'ve also been trying to get my medical records, and to date they have only provided roughly half of them, and ignored my requests for the remainder... I could write a book about this experience, but suffice it to say, it was awful. I strongly advise you to go elsewhere. There are much better programs in the area.

I had a very poor experience with this company. I have worked in mental health and substance abuse for 17 years, and my graduate degree is in counseling psychology. I unfortunately found myself on the other side of the table and battling substance abuse myself. I recently sought treatment at this facility. In my entire career, in my opinion, I have never seen such poor services provided...I, and many of the other clients felt that the staff could be very condescending and treated us like children...I discovered after I left that I did have insurance coverage, but that the reimbursement on my policy was "too low" for them to accept. ... I have filed numerous complaints with governmental agencies...there was not enough time spent weekly with your therapist for the price...Shuttling you around to free community AA and NA groups is also part of the treatment schedule. The facilities are not as nice as they make them appear on the website, and we suspected bed bugs because many of us had bites or rashes all over our bodies. The food at dinner is the same each week, and just rotates on a 7 day plan...There are just much better facilities out there. All I can say is to do your research.

Horrible experience. I only spent 3 days I. Detox. Supposed to be 30 days. Moved to apartment, broken washer and dryer. They only allow so many clothes. So u wear dirty clothes. Told me there would be a nurse 24/7. Lied! They take all of your personal things... Pocket book, bank card. Everything! You have to request to get things u need on Saturday . U can only get 3 things. Wow.... What a joke. Thank god I left early.... And I have been clean since October 12, 2015. It\'s a college campass, all the young people hang on managers of the buildings. It\'s 95% young 5% older people . I believe they need to separate older and younger. I had back surgery and told the I can\'t do some of the yoga and gym . Not to mention... All the meds they give u , ha were there to get off of meds. This place lied to me and the pictures are a joke!!! All they want is money

My experience as an alumni have been truly negative. I spent over 90 days in their care and my treatment days were helpful, I learned tools and how to start my life differently, I have almost three years sober and have been sober since I left. That I believe is my hard work, faith, and a program of AA that has gotten me to where I am at today. Since leaving treatment and the remaining couple years trying to be apart of this abt family I have longed for came to an end after numerous attempts of plugging myself in and trying to help the abt organization. Very discriminating, degrading, once they have your money, they are done. They have fired two amazing therapist recently, why? Who knows! Money hungry treatment slingers. If you want a place of loyalty and respect, this is not the place for you.

Don\'t waste your money. This company does not care about it\'s patients. Some of the staff members are good hearted and give 110% to ensuring patients receive the most they can get out of services provided. Overall, this facility is disorganized, inexperienced, money hungry.
